In the wake of King Cadfael's Shifter Purge, Bran has found himself driven from his home and being hunted for the shapeshifting gift he was born with. His desperation led him to swear his loyalty to a man who has vowed to see Cadfael brought to ruin, until a chance encounter with the king’s daughter leaves Bran questioning his future. Seren saved his life years ago, and his memories of her, and of his old life, aren’t so easily forgotten.

But there’s more danger lurking in Blaidd than the clan’s twisted king. Seren’s abilities as a seer have shown her that a darkness is coming and that a dangerous Dark Spirit of the island, Fianna, has been woken. Fianna’s fiery flames could bring the clan to the brink of destruction, but Seren continually finds her warnings ignored and her abilities belittled. She seeks allies in her father’s court, including seeking aid from one of his youngest advisors, but even those allies might be unwilling to fully defy their tyrant king. Despite Cadfael’s unwillingness to protect the clan from Fianna’s flames, Seren has vowed to destroy the dangerous Spirit. But unbeknownst to her, Bran has sworn his loyalty to it. 

When Bran is forced to choose between killing Seren or sparing her, will he turn away from the destructive Spirit he's given his soul to or will he plunge further into darkness, dooming them all? And can Seren save her people from destruction, even if Cadfael won’t?
